Bangladesh’s foreign currency reserves have dropped below $40 billion for the first time in two years after the authorities paid import bills of the Asian Clearing Union. The reserves were at $26 billion on Wednessday, Bangladesh Bank’s spokeesman Serajul Islam.
Foreign-exchange reserves, also called Forex reserves, are, in a strict sense, only foreign-currency deposits held by nationals and monetary authorities. However, in popular usage and in the list below, it also includes gold reserves, special drawing rights (SDRs) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) reserve position because this total figure, which is usually more accurately termed as official reserves or international reserves or official international reserves, is more readily available and also arguably more meaningful.

রিজার্ভ কমলে কি হবে?
দীর্ঘ দুই বছর পর দেশের বৈদেশিক মুদ্রার রিজার্ভ কমে ৩৪ বিলিয়ন ডলারের ঘরে। আমদানি ব্যয় বাড়ার কারণে দ্রুত কমছে মার্কিন ডলারের রিজার্ভ। এতে শঙ্কিত হচ্ছেন অনেকে কারণ এতে আমদানি বন্ধ হয়ে যেতে পারে যদি রিজার্ভ শূন্যের কোটায় চলে আসে। রিজার্ভ যদি শুণ্যের কোটায় আসবে না কারণ প্রবাসী আয় এবং রপ্তানি আয় চলমান থাকবে। তবে আমদানি কমার সাথে সাথে রপ্তানিও কমে আসবে এবং যদি মূল্য স্ফিতি বিষ্ফোরণ ঘটে বৈদেশিক প্রবাসী আয় দেশে আসার হার কমে যেতে পারে। রিজার্ভ কমার এ হার অব্যাহত থাকলে যেকোনো ধরনের পরিস্থিতিতে পড়তে পারে দেশ বলে সতর্ক করছেন অর্থনীতির বিশেষজ্ঞরা।
